Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures (link opens in a new window) have been working together with Norwich University of the Arts (link opens in a new window) and Kew Gardens on an exhibition on 19th and 21st century Japanese paper (washi) in Norwich, UK. There are also associated conference, talks and exhibitions of modern paper art inspired by washi. Please find the information below.
For six weeks in 2013, Norwich is home to a festival of Japanese handmade paper, or washi. The Norwich University of the Arts (NUA) Gallery is showing two unique collections of historic and contemporary washi, demonstrating both continuity and change in this ancient tradition. The International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists (IAPMA) (link opens in a new window) is also organising two exhibitions, at the Anteros Arts Foundation (link opens in a new window) and Mandell’s Gallery (link opens in a new window). Paper artists around the world have been invited to submit work that embodies the essence of the Japanese papermaking heritage.
In parallel with these three exhibitions, there will be a one-day conference on Japanese paper on Saturday 16 March 2013, to be held at NUA, several papermaking workshops, and a new book.These events offer a unique opportunity to view and engage with handmade papers from Japan and elsewhere.
EXHIBITION – WASHI: THE ART OF JAPANESE PAPER (NORWICH UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS)
A unique viewing in Europe for over 100 papers from two major collections, the 19th century Parkes papers held at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, (link opens in a new window) and 21st century papers from the Washi: The Soul of Japan Committee in Kyoto.
Both feature papers made with great skill and of exceptional beauty.

CONFERENCE – WASHI: THE ART OF JAPANESE PAPER (NORWICH UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS)
Saturday 16 March 2013, 11.00-19.00.
This day meeting features 6 experts on the traditional craft of paper making in Japan, it’s reception in Britain, and the use of washi in contemporary art. The event also includes a book-signing, bookshop and private view of the exhibitions.

BOOK LAUNCH AND TALK (LONDON)

Nancy Casserley’s book “Washi: The Art of Japanese Paper” (link opens in a new window), being published by Kew next month. The full-colour book does full justice to the Economic Botany Collection (link opens in a new window) at Kew’s 19th century Japanese papers and also showcases 21st century papers. The book launch includes a short talk by Nancy, and is being held at Daiwa House in Regent’s Park, Tuesday 19 March 2013, 18.00-20.30.
